Ratings & badges

How we rate and badge water cooler companies

Every company on WaterModo earns a star rating from 1 to 5. That rating is built primarily on web reputation, meaning what customers and the wider web say about the company across every rating platform we can find, combined with what they actually offer. Here is exactly how we score, and what each badge means.

1 to 5 star rating scale Badges are earned, never bought. No company can pay for one.
Our approach

Ratings you can actually trust

When you are comparing bottleless water cooler companies, the hardest part is knowing who is actually reliable. Reviews are scattered across Google, the Better Business Bureau, industry directories, social media, and dozens of other places, and no single one tells the whole story.

WaterModo does that work for you. We gather and weigh a company's web reputation, its reviews and mentions across every platform we can find, and pair it with a clear-eyed look at what the company offers: the coolers it installs, the filtration it fits, the areas it covers, and what its rental actually includes.

Together, these become a single, easy-to-read star rating from 1 to 5, so you can compare providers at a glance and reach out with confidence. Our ratings are independent. Companies cannot pay to raise their score, and being listed does not guarantee a high rating. Every score reflects what we found, nothing more.

What goes into a rating

The factors we score

Web reputation is the heart of every rating. What a company offers rounds out the picture, and a few more signals help sharpen the score you see on each listing.

Primary factor

Web reputation

The most important part of our rating. We look at everything customers and the wider web say about a company, not just one review site, but the full reputation it has built across the internet.

  • Ratings across every platform — Google, the Better Business Bureau, Yelp, Facebook, Trustpilot, industry directories, and any other review site where the company appears.
  • Volume and consistency of reviews — a strong score backed by many reviews over time carries more weight than a handful of ratings.
  • Recency and trend — is the company getting better or worse? Recent feedback tells us more than years-old reviews.
  • What people actually say — recurring themes on install quality, filter changes, callout response, billing clarity and contract terms, plus how the company responds to complaints.
  • Wider web presence — BBB accreditation and complaint history, news mentions, forum discussions, and any other signal of how the business operates.
Supporting factor

What they offer

A great reputation matters most when the company can actually meet your needs. We factor in the breadth and usefulness of what each provider offers your workplace.

  • Range of coolers — freestanding, countertop and under-counter units, bottle-filling stations, sparkling and hot taps, and high-capacity dispensers.
  • Filtration — sediment and carbon stages, UV, and reverse osmosis, and whether the media is certified to NSF and ANSI standards.
  • Service coverage — the cities, states and industries they serve, from small offices to warehouses, schools, gyms and clinics.
  • What is included — install, filter changes, sanitization, repairs and callouts bundled into the monthly rental rather than billed as extras.
  • Flexibility and support — contract length, notice periods, response times, and how easy the company is to work with.

More signals we weigh into every score

Years in business

How long the company has operated. A longer track record points to stability, hands-on experience, and the parts and servicing support to see out a multi-year rental.

Website quality

How professional, clear, and current the company's website is, from transparent service and pricing details to easy, obvious ways to get in touch.

Brand popularity

How well known and widely recognized the brand is, including its reach, visibility, and following across the web and social media.

The scale

What each star rating means

Every company lands somewhere on this 1 to 5 star scale based on its web reputation and what it offers.

Excellent
5 out of 5 stars

An outstanding reputation across the web with strong, consistent reviews on multiple platforms, and a full range of coolers, filtration, servicing and coverage. A provider we would recommend reaching out to first.

Very good
4 out of 5 stars

A solid, well-reviewed reputation with mostly positive feedback and a good range of coolers and servicing. A dependable choice with only minor gaps.

Good
3 out of 5 stars

A generally positive reputation with a reasonable mix of reviews, or a lighter online presence. Worth considering, and we would suggest comparing quotes from a few providers.

Fair
2 out of 5 stars

A mixed reputation with recurring concerns in reviews, limited feedback, or a narrow set of offerings. We would recommend asking pointed questions about servicing, filter changes and contract terms before committing.

Limited
1 out of 5 stars

A weak or very limited web reputation: significant negative feedback, unresolved complaints, or too little information to verify. Approach with extra caution.

How we vet listings

What our badges mean

Every company on WaterModo is reviewed by our team. These badges show at a glance what we confirmed, so you know who you are dealing with before you request a quote.

Verified

Verified

We confirmed this is a real, active business serving the areas it lists. It is the baseline every listing has to clear: if we cannot verify a company exists and genuinely offers bottleless cooler service, it does not get the badge.

What we check

  • Company details match public business records, including registered name and trading status.
  • Contact information is live and reachable: working phone, email, and a current website.
  • The company genuinely offers bottleless, mains-fed cooler rental or service, not only bottled delivery.
  • The service areas on the listing are areas the company actually covers.
Established Provider

Established Provider

Time in business, confirmed from public records. A longer track record usually means steadier servicing and parts support over the life of your rental, which matters when a contract runs for years rather than weeks.

10+ years 15+ years 20+ years

What we check

  • Incorporation or registration date from state and federal business records.
  • Continuous trading history, so a dormant or restarted entity is not counted as decades of service.
  • Corroborating evidence such as domain registration age, earliest reviews, and press or directory records.
  • The tier awarded is the highest threshold the evidence clearly supports, never a rounded-up claim.
NSF Certified Filtration

NSF Certified Filtration

This provider uses filtration certified to NSF and ANSI standards. It is an independent benchmark for contaminant reduction, not a claim the company makes about itself, which is why we look for the certification listing rather than the marketing copy.

What we check

  • The units or filter media the provider installs appear in a certification listing or carry documented NSF and ANSI certification.
  • Which standards apply, such as NSF/ANSI 42 for taste, odor and chlorine, 53 for health-related contaminants, 55 for UV, 58 for reverse osmosis, and 401 for emerging compounds.
  • The certification is current, not expired or withdrawn, at the time we check.
  • Certification covers the filtration itself. It is not a claim about any single installation, so confirm the exact model quoted to you.
Coverage Area

National, Regional or Local

How far this provider reaches. National suits multi-site rollouts, regional balances reach with familiarity, and local often means faster on-site service. None is better than the others: the right one depends on where your sites are.

National Regional Local

What we check

  • National — installs and services across most of the country, usually through branches or an accredited partner network, and can handle multi-state rollouts on one agreement.
  • Regional — covers several states or a broad multi-metro area from its own depots and engineers.
  • Local — serves a single metro or a defined service radius, typically with the shortest callout times.
  • Coverage is checked against branch locations, stated service areas, and whether servicing is done in-house or subcontracted.
WaterModo Rating

WaterModo Rating

A 1 to 5 star score built from the provider's reputation across public review sources, weighed for volume and recency, and rounded out by what the company offers. One number instead of a dozen tabs.

1 to 5 stars

What we check

  • Web reputation across every rating platform we can find, weighted for volume, consistency and recency.
  • The range of coolers, filtration, coverage and servicing included in the rental.
  • Supporting signals: years in business, website quality, and brand popularity.
  • Full detail on each factor is set out in the rating factors and the star scale above.
Our method

How we award badges

Badges are earned, not bought. No company can pay for one. Here is how a listing gets reviewed, kept current, and corrected.

Step 01

We gather the evidence

We pull together public business records, review platforms, certification listings, and the company's own published service and coverage information, then check the pieces against each other.

Step 02

We score and award

The rating is calculated from the factors above, and each badge is awarded only where the evidence clearly meets the published criteria. Anything we cannot confirm simply does not appear on the listing.

Step 03

We keep it current

Listings are re-checked at least annually, and sooner if something material changes. Ratings can go down as well as up, and badges are removed when what we confirmed is no longer true.

A badge is a record, not a guarantee. It reflects what we were able to confirm at the time we checked, and it is not an endorsement or a promise about your experience. Always confirm pricing, contract length, filtration, and servicing directly with the provider before you sign.

Good to know

Rating and badge FAQs

Common questions about how WaterModo scores providers and awards badges.

Can a company pay for a badge or a higher WaterModo rating?
No. Badges are earned against the published criteria on this page, and ratings are calculated from evidence we gather ourselves. No company can buy, sponsor, or negotiate a badge or a star rating, and paying to be listed does not change a score.
How often are ratings and badges updated?
We re-check every listing at least once a year, and sooner when something material changes, such as a spike in complaints, a change of ownership, a new service area, or a filtration certification being added or withdrawn. Badges can be removed as well as awarded.
What if a company thinks its rating is wrong?
Any provider can ask us to re-check its listing. Send us the correction along with supporting evidence, such as registration records, certification listings, or updated service areas, and we will review it and update the listing if the evidence holds. Contact us to start.
Does a low rating mean a company is bad?
Not necessarily. A low score often reflects a thin public record rather than poor service. Small local providers with few online reviews can score lower simply because there is less to verify, which is why we show what went into every rating and suggest comparing a few quotes.
Is a badge a guarantee or an endorsement?
No. A badge records what we were able to confirm at the time we checked, not a promise about your experience. Always confirm pricing, contract terms, filtration, and servicing directly with the provider before you sign.
